Here we will talk about Celtic Halloween and its symbols.
The tradition originates from the ancient Celtic festival Samhain.
During the Samhain people were used to wearing costumes to protect themselves from ghosts.
Later on, Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as All Saints Day, then this day incorporated some Samhain traditions, and the evening before was named All Hallows Eve, subsequently called Halloween
Now let’s understand some Celtic symbols and see some of them being used by modern brands nowadays.
1 – The Celtic Tree of life
The Celtic Tree represents strength, longevity, and wisdom, in addition, according to the Celtic it could symbolize rebirth.
2 – The Celtic Cross
It possesses several meanings. One possible interpretation is the four cardinal directions of the Earth (north, south, east, and west).
Another idea is it represents the four elements: Earth, fire, water, and air.
Regarding the four quadrants, it could be associated with the four seasons of the year or the four stages of the day (morning, midday, evening, and midnight).
3 – The Shamrock
The Shamrock is an important Druid symbol that represents the Triad.
As claimed by the legend of ST. Patrick utilized this to explain the unity of the Holy Trinity.
4 – The Triquetra/Trinity Knot
It is one of the Celtic symbols for the family that could also express eternal love, it is also considered the oldest symbol of spirituality.
5 – The Dara Knot
The symbol acts as the root system of an ancient oak.
There is not only one design for it, however, all versions are also focused on the same theme.
Celtic symbols used nowadays in modern brands
1 – Boston Celtics
The American basketball team has changed the logo a lot during the years, however, it always keeps the shamrock as a key part of the design.
2 – The Celtic Football Club
Equally using the Shamrock, this team is very old as well as very traditional in Scotland and across Europe.
3 – Guinness
This Harp is a Celtic Symbol, however, it was prohibited by the British in the 16th century in an effort to break the Irish pride.
The musical instrument was played by the nobles, and the first historic register is from the 6th century.
To conclude Guinness incorporated this design into its logo as a tribute to Ireland and the company still being one of the most significant employers in Ireland.
4 – Ryanair
The company also uses the harp as a symbol, in addition, a draw that could represent an angel or a woman with wings which makes total sense as it is an airline.
5 – Bord Gáis Energy
The company clearly developed another style for the Trinity Knot. We can plainly see it placed on the logo.
